The Role
The role requires a Fellow of the Australian Faculty of Occupational Medicine to provide timely written and verbal advice and recommendations on occupational and environmental health issues to inform Defence health policy, programs and practice/incident management. The role is required to; engage and collaborate with key stakeholders, write, develop, review and oversee implementation, of Occupational Defence health policy; review applications for health monitoring determinations and develop and review protocols; develop strategies to lessen risk to Defence personnel in working environments, be conversant with civilian best practice; ensure Defence Occupational Medicine policy is appropriate for Defence whilst complementary to the civilian sector and aligns with regulatory requirements. The position is central to the development of occupational medicine policy and health monitoring programs within the Australian Defence Force. The position works with a degree of independence as a 1-person Occupational Medicine team, within a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals across multiple craft groups.

The salary listed includes the Defence Enterprise Agreement salary range plus an additional Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). The additional salary component offered is different for each applicant depending on skills and qualifications.

Our Ideal Candidate
The position would suit a highly motivated, specialist occupational physician with a minimum of five years post-specialisation professional experience who has an interest in policy development, policy implementation, business governance and health service delivery. In addition to demonstrated occupational medicine experience, a demonstrated interest and experience in areas such as primary health care, mental health, aviation medicine, underwater medicine and workplace rehabilitation would be advantageous. Competitive applicants for the role will have an understanding of the Defence operating environment.

The successful candidate will have refined interpersonal skills and strategic acumen for liaison and collaboration with key stakeholders; demonstrable initiative in development of occupational and environmental health policy; refined analytical skills to identify emerging occupational and environmental health issues; attention to detail in review and implementation of policy; discipline and detail in reporting to strategic leadership; demonstrable ability to work independently where appropriate, preparation of high quality reports and delivering results in a time-constrained environment.
