Division Responsibilities

The Technology Assessment and Access Division (TAAD) provides reliable, timely and affordable access to medicines, devices and other medical technologies and improved choice in health services to all Australians. This includes managing the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), Life Saving Drugs Program (LSDP), Prostheses List (PL) and blood, organ and tissue programs, and other targeted assistance programs; evaluation of new technologies; and supporting key Commonwealth health committees.

The Department of Health is seeking to appoint several Medical Advisors at various levels, based on skills and experience, in the TAAD to deliver high quality professional advice that is based on a sound knowledge of clinical medicine and the operation of Australia’s health care system, public health policy and health financing.

Position Overview

Medical Advisers in the TAAD provide expert advice based on analysis of clinical research evidence, health systems, population health, health financing, regulations and public policy as well as stakeholder views obtained through consultations; and the articulation, analysis, development or review of policy relating to medical or public health issues. The position/s provides a key link between the clinical advisory committees (Medical Services Advisory Committee, Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee and Prostheses List Advisory Committee, industry, prescribers and pharmacists.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Registration under AHPRA as a medical practitioner (mandatory)
  • Post graduate qualifications and/or experience in public health, health technology assessment, public health or heath economics/ health financing are desirable. 

Note

A range of Medical Officer 2 through to Medical Officer 5 positions will be filled at the level determined by the Selection Committee depending on successful candidates’ skills and experience.
