The Location

Tasmania’s West Coast is a world apart – a string of vibrant and close-knit communities, connected by roads that wind between rugged peaks and valleys,  surrounded on all sides by unique Gondwanan cool temperate rainforest.

Queenstown is the largest town and primary hub for the greater West Coast region. It has a strong colonial and early 20th century pioneering heritage, with a number of historic art deco buildings lining its broad streets. Queenstown boasts a number of activities and attractions such as the West Coast Wilderness Railway, a tourism rail venture that has seen the original mining purposed Abt railway track to Strahan restored, along with the original steam-powered locomotives that plied the route over a hundred years ago.

The town plays host to the Unconformity Festival, a rapidly growing biennial contemporary arts festival that transforms Queenstown and surrounds every second year, which explores the rich, fascinating, and at times confronting history of the region. Queenstown is also the gateway to the great South-West wilderness area, which incorporates some of Tasmania’s most popular bushwalks.
