The Role
The Senior Medical Officer position would suit a medical practitioner with considerable experience in occupational medicine or general practice and recognised training in Defence Aviation Medicine (or willingness to undertake Defence Aviation Medicine training).
The successful candidate will work within a framework of legislation and policy to deliver quality healthcare to Permanent and Reserve members of the Australian Defence Force. This position combines hands on medical management and higher level advisory functions and would suit a practitioner with an interest in clinical governance and quality.
The salary listed ($149,927 - $239,883) includes the Defence Enterprise Agreement salary range of $149,927 - $155,485 plus an additional Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). The additional salary component offered is different for each applicant depending on skills and qualifications.
The current position is ongoing however we will be creating a merit pool to fill similar ongoing and non-ongoing positions that become available within the next 12 months.
About our Team
Joint Health Unit Victoria Tasmania provides high quality, multidisciplinary and accountable health care to ADF members in its area. This is provided by multiple Health Centres and smaller clinics throughout Victoria and Tasmania.
This position, based at Victoria Barracks Melbourne, is responsible for the clinical operation and clinical governance of the Victoria Barracks and Laverton Centres in Melbourne and Anglesea Health Centre in Hobart.
Working with in an established team, the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) will ensure optimum health care to provide a healthy and deployable ADF with in the area. This will include both internal and external referrals including rehabilitation to a wide variety of clinical providers
The SMO will provide high level technical health advice to Commanders so as they can operational use their workforce with in established legislation, regulation and policy as it applies to the ADF
The SMO is required to communicate regularly to higher Health Command any trends or notable events in healthcare.
Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate would have extensive experience in general practice with an emphasis on occupational and rehabilitation medicine. Past ADF experience would very beneficial and well considered but not essential. The candidate will have experience with complex mental health cases.
The candidate will be able to work with in a small multidisciplinary team and use outside resources appropriately and accountably. The candidate will work with in a structure policy environment requiring reference to relevant Defence policy and decisions
The candidate will act as a mentor to more junior Medical Officers while also being able to communicate effectively with Command and ADF commanders.
Experience in ADF aviation medicine or willingness to train will be required although only in a limited number of occasions. Some travel between Melbourne sites is expected. The ability for funded travel to Hobart occasionally is required. Use of IT to undertake remote consultations and discussions is required.
