Location:

Katherine is located 320 km south of Darwin, and is situated on the banks of the Katherine River, which is part of the Daly River system. The upper reaches rise into the Arnhem Land escarpment and Kakadu to the north east. The Victoria River (The Northern Territory's largest river system) is situated 189 km south-west of Katherine along the Victoria Highway.

Katherine is often referred to as the "Crossroads of the Outback" due to its location between the Darwin region, Kakadu National Park, the Barkley Region, the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Our services cover 14 remote communities and their associated outstations through 9 primary health care centres in an approximate 400km arc from Katherine.  The primary access roads are the Central Arnhem Highway and the Roper Highway. 

Our main sites are Barunga, Manyallaluk, Wugularr, Bulman & Weemol (Central Arnhem Highway) plus Jilkminggan, Minyerri, Ngukurr & Urapunga (Roper Highway). Mataranka Primary Health Care Centre is located on the main Stuart Highway and the health centre has historically provided extended emergency coverage as far south as Daly Waters. This has a major negative impact on core Primary Health Care delivery.

Primary Objective of role: 

General Practitioners (GPs) are expected to work as members of a multi-disciplinary team, led by the Director of Public Health and Planning (DPHP). The role involves direct provision of General Practice Services, support for and sharing skills with other team members and participation in key primary health care initiatives and community consultation.

The GP will operate with a commitment to the principles, practices and policies of the Sunrise Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (SHS) Board and in particular ensure that Aboriginal culture is reflected in all activities. Doctors work with remote teams who live full-time in the communities including remote area nurses, Aboriginal health professionals and other support staff. The GP travels to different communities on different days each week.

Context Statement: 

SHS is an independent, community controlled health service that provides services to nine individual remote communities in the eastern Katherine region, Northern Territory (NT). GPs provide services to all these communities on a roster system. Long-term GPs are allocated specific communities to serve regularly.
