Situated in Burnie, a town of 20,000 people on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Bass House Surgery is centrally located in the Burnie CBD.
The practice was established in 1974 and holds AGPAL accreditation. Providing a comprehensive family medicine service along with aviation medicals, it is committed to medical education and training, being an accredited training practice for both RACGP and ACRRM and offering supervision for fourth year medical students. Bass House Surgery aims to train its own doctors plus registrars and students to the highest level of competency in a supportive environment.
The practice has six well equipped consulting rooms, a procedure room with ECG, spirometry, defibrillator and dermatoscopes, and a laboratory. Currently five full-time GPs and one GP registrar work in the practice, supported by three part-time nurses, practice manager and four receptionists. The practice is fully computerised using Medical Director and PracSoft.
The practice is open Mondays to Fridays from 8.30 am – 6.30 pm and Saturdays from 10.00 am – 12.00 pm, with all GPs required to participate in the Saturday morning clinic roster. After hours is shared one night per week and 1:5 weekends and the practice has recently started to use the after-hours triaging service GP Assist.
The practice provides health care for some of the residents at nearby Umina Park and Yaraandoo aged care facilities. Accident and emergency services are available at North West Regional Hospital, a five minute drive away.
The practice offers bulk billing to pensioners, veterans and children less than sixteen years of age, while a co-payment is charged to other patients, ensuring an attractive level of remuneration. Appointments are booked at 15 minute intervals.
