Adelaide Unicare is a company which is 100% owned and controlled by the University of Adelaide. We own and run 5 General Practices in South Australia.

This vacancy exists at our Minlaton Medical Centre which is located in Minlaton on the beautiful Yorke Peninsula about 200 kilometres from Adelaide CBD.

Applicants must be fellowshipped and have a genuine desire to work in a busy country practice. Applicants do not however need to have completed their Medicare 10 year moratorium so IMGs who have obtained their fellowship but who are still subject to the Medicare moratorium are eligible to apply. We will also consider IMGs who only have general registration providing they have relevant Australian based general practice experience.

Applicants will need to have a wide experience of working in general practice – preferably in a country setting. They must be comfortable working with patients of all age cohorts and will also need to be competent in Australian emergency medicine.

As an independent contractor, Adelaide Unicare provides all services, facilities, infrastructure, nursing and administrative staff. The amount charged by Adelaide Unicare for the provision of such services is modest with doctors retaining approximately 70% of their gross billings. These arrangements mean you can focus on what matters most to you – your patients. Full time doctors can expect to generate above market related earnings.

The Practice

The practice is a well-established country practice which is highly regarded by the local community. It is a mixed billing practice & is fully accredited with AGPAL. The team of 3 General Practitioners is supported by a highly experienced Practice Manager, practice nurses, administrative staff, and visiting specialists & allied health providers. There is also an on-site pathology collection centre which is very convenient for patients.

The Practice also has an arrangement with Country Health SA to operate and manage a 24 hour Accident & Emergency Unit. This Unit is attached to the Minlaton Medical Centre and the service it provides is highly valued by the local community given the fact that there is no hospital in the town. The nearest hospital is the Yorketown Hospital which is approximately 30 kilometres away. All the Centre’s doctors have admitting rights to the Yorketown Hospital.

The presence of the A&E Unit adds diversity and interest to the type of patients and conditions that doctors will see. The A&E Unit is managed by the doctors & nursing staff from the Minlaton Medical Centre. Both the doctors and nurses are required to participate in the relevant on call rosters.

The Location

Minlaton is a pleasant country town approximately 200 kilometres from Adelaide & centrally located on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. The town is close to coastal areas which are approximately 25 kilometres away to both the east & west. Coastal towns within this region are noted for their excellent fishing catches both from the beach or jetty or by boat.

Minlaton itself has a population of about 1,000 people but it also services surrounding towns. The surrounding towns bring Minlaton’s catchment area to approximately 5,000 people.

The main industry in the district is livestock farming (cattle & sheep) & crop growing (wheat).

Minlaton is serviced by 2 banks, 1 supermarket, a local post office, hotel, pharmacy, veterinary service and a variety of smaller shops. There is also a high care nursing home in the town as well as an aged care hostel

Local schooling provides schooling from reception to year 12. In addition there is a kindergarten in the town.

The town is well serviced with sporting facilities including a sporting club & 18 hole golf course. Sports on offer include tennis, hockey, basketball, netball, football, indoor soccer, table tennis, polocrosse, cricket, bowls & golf.

Teaching focus

The Practice has a strong focus on Teaching & Research in association with the University of Adelaide. These links mean that the Practice is involved in the teaching of rural orientated general practice to medical students. It also has been involved with the University of Adelaide in a number of research projects.
