THE ORGANISATION:

NT PHN is partnering with Mala’la Health Service Aboriginal Corporation to find a Rural Medical Practitioner to join their passionate and dedicated team. Mala'la health service has a vision to improve the health and well being of the people in the Maningrida community and surrounding outstations. The services provided by Mala'la health service include primary health care, aged care, renal dialysis, community wellness, and youth services. Maningrida is a remote Indigenous community in Arnhem Land Northern Territory, 520 km east of Darwin, that boasts a beautiful seaside location steeped in history and culture.

THE ROLE:

The role of the successful Rural Medical Practitioner, is to provide primary medical services to the Maningrida community and surrounding outstations, by utilising your rural and remote experience and working collaboratively with other health professionals, to deliver excellent health care to patients.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide primary medical services
  • Provide public health services using a community development model to enhance health outcomes, improve services and infrastructure
  • Provide an holistic approach to health care that includes care planning and case conferencing with patients who have a chronic disease
  • Be responsible for the coordination of medical retrieval and patient travel services, which includes tasking Care Flight aircraft and crew
  • Participate in the collection and maintenance of computerised client health information
  • Ensure that Medicare billing is optimised to its full potential to realise maximum return to the community for service development
  • Work collaboratively with a range of internal and external health providers
  • Undertake programs and tasks appropriate to family and preventative medicine and primary health care within a community and health education context
  • Be opportunistic in the development of health care plans for patients
  • Be proactive in health promotion, to enhance the community education and understanding of health issue’s
  • Conversant with and utilise the practice incentive.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

To be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the below essential criteria:

Only applicants with unrestricted working rights in Australia will be considered for this opportunity (Australian Citizen or Permanent Residents)

  • Current CV and contact details for two referees
  • Appropriate attainment of Medical Tertiary qualifications
  • Eligibility for registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Registered with the Northern Territory Medical Board of Australia
  • Hold fellowship or equivalent of either the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) or Australasian Faculty Public Health Medicine (AFPHM) together with appropriate rural training or equivalent training and experience
  • Have vocational registration as a GP
  • Have proven and extensive post graduate clinical experience, including general practice, paediatrics, obstetrics and emergency medicine
  • Commitment to Aboriginal primary health care linked to “closing the gap” initiatives
  • Experience and skill in working with computerised patient information management systems and office applications
  • Preparedness to travel by road or light aircraft as required
  • Preparedness to undertake cross cultural training and mentorship
  • Ability to interact with people from diverse cultures
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and work effectively within an Aboriginal community
  • Capacity to create and initiate options / opportunities in program service delivery
  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills
  • Current Working With Children (NT Ochre Card)
  • Current National Police clearance
  • Current drivers licence

BENEFITS AND INCENTIVES:

  • Base salary of $240,000 plus up to 50% of billings to a maximum of $100,000 in Medicare fees generated

  • Opportunity for General Practice Rural Incentives Program (as at 1 November 2016). Congress operates in MM6 and MM7 regions, providing access to annual additional MBS payments of up to $35K in urban and $60K in rural locations

THE LOCATION:

Maningrida is one of the largest remote towns in the Northern Territory, and is located approximately 500km east of Darwin and 300km north east of Jabiru in Arnhem Land at the mouth of the Liverpool River. A permanent settlement was established in the late 1940s, originally as a trading post with Aboriginals in the area. Maningrida is the major service centre for the region, with a school, health clinic, multiple food outlets and two supermarkets, service station, arts centre, creche, and a tarmac airport, with commercial flights operating daily to Darwin. The name Maningrida is an Anglicised version of the Kunibídji name Manayingkarírra, which comes from the phrase Mane djang karirra, meaning "the place where the Dreaming changed shape."
