SMOC positions support all branches of the Division, including Immigration Health, Child Wellbeing, Organisation Wellbeing, other divisions, the ABF and the office of the Chief Medical Officer/ Surgeon General (CMO/SG). Such support includes, but is not limited to:

  • input in health policies, procedures. practices and systems
  • input in clinical governance, quality assurance and risk management
  • input in intergovernmental activity and liaison with professional medical officers representing Migration 5 partners as well as other external stakeholders
  • input in clinical review of complex health cases

The focus of the SMOC role is to ensure that departmental and Australian Border Force (ABF) officers are provided with expert evidence based clinical advice and strategic clinical direction so that to enable informed decision making. SMOCs may concentrate on one or several of the specific duties or responsibilities listed below.

The positions may be based in Sydney CBD or Canberra ACT

Mandatory qualifications and experience

  • You must be registered or eligible to be registered, as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • At least five years of clinical experience in the Australian Health system

Desirable qualifications and experience

  • ISO 9001 accreditation
  • Post Graduate qualifications, ideally in Public Health/Tropical Medicine, Occupational and Environmental Medicine and/or Medical Administration

To be eligible to work with the Department of Home Affairs and Border Protection you must:

  • Be an Australian Citizen;
  • Obtain and maintain the required AGSVA clearance;
  • Obtain and maintain a current Employment Suitability Clearance;
  • Undergo a health assessment (if applicable)
